ChipMOS /Bermuda Purchases TCP Equipment from Walsin Advanced Electronics To Increase Its TCP CapacityHsinchu, Taiwan, April 17, 2002 - ChipMOS TECHNOLOGIES (Bermuda) LTD. (Nasdaq: IMOS) ("ChipMOS/Bermuda") today announced that it has signed a contract to purchase a complete set of Tape Carrier Package (TCP) assembly and test equipment from Walsin Advanced Electronics LTD. ("WAE"), located in the Kaohsiung Export Processing Zone, Taiwan. The equipment will be installed in ChipMOS's Tainan fab and is expected to increase its TCP production capacity by 2 million pieces per month to a total output of 14 million pieces per month from Q3, 2002.
"With the recovery of global economic conditions, we are facing strong demand from flat panel display manufacturers for our technical services on TCP products . In order to satisfy the sharply increasing demand from our customers and further enhance our revenue base, it is essential for us to increase our capacity and that is why we decided to purchase this equipment from WAE," said S.J. Cheng, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ChipMOS/Bermuda. "This purchase is really mutually beneficial. It not only increases our capacity and reduces our cost of production but also enhances the market competitiveness in the long run."
With high barriers to entry due to the cost of acquiring new equipment, TCP testing and assembly service providers need significant capacity to achieve the economies of scale necessary to make this a profitable business. ChipMOS/Bermuda is already the largest TCP assembly and testing services provider in Taiwan with existing capacity of 12 million pieces per month prior to the WAE equipment acquisition. The Company's purchase of equipment from other manufacturers will further enhance this position and help to increase the utilization rate of TCP equipment.
